Topping out at Manchester Metropolitan University

news image

A major milestone has been reached in the construction of Manchester Metropolitan University’s (MMU) new Science and Engineering building. We held a topping out ceremony with MMU senior leaders invited to complete the final part of the concrete slab on the roof of the main building. This is the largest building project ever undertaken by MMU and required the demolition of the former John Dalton West structure before the new building could start to take shape. This new construction, plus the refurbishment of the existing John Dalton Tower, are taking place simultaneously on the Chester Street site. The project has been a major collaboration with B+K and MMU working closely together to deliver the scheme. Professor Karen Moore, Chief Operating Officer at Manchester Metropolitan University, said:  “The topping out ceremony is another milestone in the creation of our new state-of-the-art building for Manchester Metropolitan University’s Faculty of Science and Engineering. “Working collaboratively with Bowmer + Kirkland, we are creating a truly exciting space for learning and research. The new Science and Engineering building is a direct investment into STEM education and research, transforming the way we teach and how our students learn. “We are fully committed to developing a space that allows students, staff and industry leaders to interact; ensuring knowledge and scientific breakthroughs are transferred from lecture theatres and laboratories to real world environments.”  Bowmer + Kirkland North-West Regional Director, Paul Sykes, said: “We have enjoyed working together with MMU and our wider project team. Collaborating to provide a facility such as this, which can only enhance the learning experience for thousands of students, is a privilege and we are very proud to have played such a major part in the future of the University.”  The facility represents a £115 million investment by MMU and will be completed in January 2024.
