Sustainability

We Build Sustainably

We build with purpose and understand our responsibilities as one of the UK’s leading building contractors

Our commitment to sustainability and thoughtful placemaking is echoed throughout every project we undertake. We are focussed on reducing our carbon footprint across every aspect of our business, from working closely with our supply chain to decorbonising our offices.

Our commitment

We are on track to achieve net zero carbon for scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2040, with a target of reaching 50% net zero by 2030. We aim to remove at least 90% of all scope 3 emissions by 2040, through harnessing innovative technology to reduce carbon emissions and drive operational efficiencies.

Our strategy includes a minimum 5% year-on-year reduction in emissions, alongside a 1% annual reduction in waste. We are targeting over 95% site waste recycling by 2030 and are committed to working closely with our supply chain to implement and support low carbon solutions that align with our net zero goals.

Our journey to Net Zero Carbon

Embodied carbon
For clients focussed on reducing embodied carbon we conduct Whole Life Carbon Assessments using OneClick LCA. This ensures that material carbon content is planned, managed, and delivered to meet targets, considering current recycling and future reuse. Our verified approach gives clients confidence in achieving optimal solutions and value.

Carbon delivery
We have developed construction processes and data to significantly improve accuracy to further refine our embodied carbon calculations. Using platforms such as SMARTWASTE and Qflow enables us to measure a project’s environmental impact across a range of KPIs including waste, site carbon emissions, transport and biodiversity to capture the entire lifecycle to deliver true Net Zero Carbon projects.

Operational carbon
Design-for-performance is a fundamental principle in minimising the operational carbon of a building, we partner with leading UK consultancies on Net Zero Carbon to ensure that we are at the forefront of best practice. NABERS is now a widely adopted standard verification of Net Zero that we work towards for numerous clients and have achieved 5 and 5.5* ratings for a number of projects.

Maximising sustainability for our client partners

Our pioneering sustainable office and education schemes have put us at the forefront of the industry, along with our wider sector experience including the UK’s first true net zero carbon school, Maritime Academy which was delivered in partnership with the Department for Education.

We are also proud to have delivered the first NABERS certified scheme in the North West at NOMA’s 4 Angel Square in 2023, achieving net zero carbon in operation, along with an impressive embodied carbon rating.

We have continued to deliver NABERS certification and reduced embodied carbon in both design and delivery on some outstanding commercial office schemes including Island and Eden.

Smart solutions

In partnership with B+K group company Innovare Offsite we have developed a Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) solution for the Department for Education and other clients incorporating our structural insulated panel (SIP) technology within our unique Configure Offsite 3.0 design process. This is a pre-designed flexible DfMA solution which has been specifically developed to meet the DfE’s specifications for increased thermal efficiency and low embodied carbon, incorporating sustainable timber and Passivhaus principles.

Configure 3.0 is a hybrid offsite solution that lowers a project's carbon footprint by condensing construction operations, reducing material transport and contractor commuting emissions, and offering a more integrated approach.

At Bowmer + Kirkland, we have been measuring and reducing our carbon footprint for over 17 years through the Planet Mark certification. With a clear roadmap to reach Net Zero by 2040, ten years ahead of national targets. Our aim is to integrate sustainability into every stage of our construction operations, aligning B+K with global climate goals and evolving industry standards.
