Social value

Overview

We create meaningful and long-term social value by engaging in activities that make a positive impact on local communities

As one of the top construction companies in the UK and a family business, we understand our responsibilities to our staff, our clients, communities, our supply chain and the environment. We create meaningful and long-term social value by engaging in activities during a build that make a positive impact on people’s lives, benefiting the environment and local community.

We make a difference

We are proud of the positive impact that we have on the communities we work within. We do our very best to employ local and spend local on every development. We encourage our supply chain and partners to do the same and regularly monitor them to ensure they are aligned to our business practices and the high standards we expect from them.

It is vital that we proactively create the maximum in social value impact for each project we work on and can demonstrate for each our impact on the environment and local communities.

Community engagement

We proactively engage with the communities we build in, ensuring that we listen to their needs and incorporate their feedback, we work had to provide a regular stream of communication to them to keep them informed of the progress of the project.

We are a Partner of the Considerate Constructors Scheme, all of our construction sites are registered with the organisation which means we always work to set of standards which includes consideration of the community and the environment and our own workforce.

Creating jobs and developing skills

We are dedicated to creating opportunities for young people, whether its T-Level placements, degree apprenticeship schemes, training or organising visits for local schools and colleges. We aim to support and inspire the next generation of construction professionals. We also support local SMEs and social enterprises, work with NEETs, ex-offenders, disadvantaged groups and the homeless to help them learn new skills and gain valuable experience.

As a main contractor, it’s a privilege for us to become a part of many different communities across the country – whether it’s our 20th build there or our first, we are always keen to understand what makes a particular community tick and then get stuck into helping it prosper. Whether it’s spending with local businesses, employing someone who’s fallen on hard times, installing a community garden or inspiring a young person into a career in construction, for us, social value is about making a positive impact on people’s lives and benefiting local communities along the way."

Local impact

From charitable initiatives to volunteering, our social value team works hard to help local causes. We fundraise and donate to help local hospitals, schools and community groups, and we’re always keen to get stuck in and help out where we can by getting teams together to improve local spaces.

Measurement

We record our social value activities on each project using the National TOMs (Themes Outcomes and Measures) to measure our impact. Our activities are verified on the Social Value Portal platform
