Inclusion and Diversity

Equality, diversity and inclusion

Successfully delivering for our clients comes from having the best on board

Through diversity, inclusion and a true family sense of belonging, we’re working hard to keep improving our team culture and representation.

We value and respect each and every one of our employees and the opportunities at Bowmer + Kirkland are open to people of all races, backgrounds and circumstances, we encourage our staff to aim high and be all they can be. We strive to create a working environment where their opinions are valued and encouraged, and where they truly understand the role they play in making our business as successful as it is.

We are committed to equal opportunities within our business

Whilst the construction industry has traditionally been a male dominated environment, we continually work hard to overcome this and are proud of the steps we have taken to ensure inclusivity across all areas of the business. We work closely with schools and colleges across the country highlighting the wide-range of rewarding careers that we have available across our site and office teams, providing ongoing support and mentoring to our employees. We also hold annual focus groups to generate actionable insights from staff to help us retain both female and male talent within the business.

Our internal We Learn platform brings together a selection of courses for staff covering a range of subjects including equality, diversity and inclusion to provide guidance and understanding of these concepts to create a more inclusive working environment.

Diversity + Inclusion

Our commitment beyond the workplace

Our commitment to Diversity & Inclusion is not limited to our own business. As part of our proactive social value activities, which we undertake across each of our projects, we work with a range of stakeholders to break down barriers to opportunity and employment with the aim of challenging stereotypes and raising aspirations. Some of our initiatives include:

  • Addressing the forecast skills shortage within our industry by working with ELSA Next Generation, FutureIn, NE1 CAN and Icon Group to support NEETs into construction careers.

  • Giving people a second chance at life by working with Constructing Futures (O’Neill & Brennan) and Key4Life to provide work experience and jobs to prison leavers.

  • As a signatory of the Armed Forces Covenant, working with the Career Transition Partnership and specialised recruitment agencies to provide work experience and jobs to service leavers.

  • As a Disability Confident Employer, engaging with SEN students (e.g. work experience, site visits, career talks) and working with the Percy Hedley Foundation to bridge the disability gap.
