Strengthening safety at height with specialist First Responder training

news image

First aid colleagues across two live Bowmer + Kirkland projects have successfully completed a specialist Tower Crane Emergency First Responder training course, enhancing our teams’ ability to respond to emergencies in some of the most challenging environments on site.

The training has taken place at The Republic, a commercial office development for Landsec in the Mayfield district of Manchester, and Kirkstall Road, Leeds, a build-to-rent scheme for Glenbrook.

Delivered by WOLFFKRAN, the course is designed to equip non-crane personnel with the skills and confidence to safely access tower cranes and deliver lifesaving first aid in high-risk, restricted spaces, focusing on scenarios where conventional first aid response may not be sufficient, particularly when an incident occurs at height within a crane cab.

Participants were trained in safely ascending and descending tower cranes, how to isolate crane operations to prevent unintended movement, assessing and managing casualties in confined environments and to deliver essential first aid, including CPR and use of defibrillators (AEDs).

The training is aligned with guidance from Resuscitation Council UK and supports compliance with the Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981, which require employers to provide appropriate first aid arrangements and any additional training relevant to site conditions.

Greg Hancock, Senior Site Manager at Bowmer + Kirkland said: “This comprehensive training has been a great exercise in building confidence, from climbing a crane mast to dealing with emergency situations in confined spaces, myself and the team found all areas of the training insightful and above all, extremely useful.”

Jonathan Parker, Training Manager at Wolffkran said: “It’s been a pleasure to deliver the course at Bowmer + Kirkland’s sites. Giving the site first aid teams the confidence and experience to deliver lifesaving treatment at height on tower cranes is a positive step in ensuring everyone on site can be supported.”

This initiative reflects our ongoing commitment to raising safety standards across all projects. By investing in specialist training, we are ensuring that our teams are equipped to respond quickly and effectively to emergencies when they occur.
