Teamwork gets the job done at Moorways Sports Village

Derby’s reputation as a leisure destination has been further improved by the completion of the city’s Moorways Sports Village, which we handed over on time and on budget, despite the challenges of a pandemic. The outstanding facility continued our successful partnership with client Derby City Council, Architect Faulkner Browns and Project Managers Mace,  as we all worked together on the award-winning Derby Arena which we completed in 2014. Structural Engineering specialists Curtins joined the team for the £42m Sports Village which includes a 10-lane, 50m pool designed to accommodate national and international competitions. The pool can be sectioned into three, 25-metre pools and has a moveable floor which can vary the depth of the water to offer a wide range of activities. The water park area includes the UK’s first wave generating Wow ball and England’s first wave rider, providing single or double rides in inflatable tubes. Others features in this superb facility include: A beach area Two, four-storey flumes Water play area for younger children Fitness studios Sauna and steam areas State of the art gym – with a specially designed space for Olympic standard weightlifting Changing areas A café and soft play Multi use rooms for private hire Terraced seating for 450 spectators   Bowmer + Kirkland Regional Director, Steve Chambers, said: “This project has been a major highlight for our team. It’s not every day you build an international standard Olympic-sized swimming pool and all the other amazing facilities on offer. “The entire project is a result of great teamwork by everyone involved and our existing relationships with many of the team helped to achieve an on budget and on time handover, despite many challenges thrown at us by Covid. “I am very proud of all our people who worked so hard to achieve a great result for Derby City Council and everyone who will enjoy this facility for years to come.” Derby City Councillor Ross McCristal, Cabinet Member for Wellbeing, Leisure, Culture and Tourism, said: “It’s testament to the hard work of everyone involved that we have reached this milestone. Everyone pulled out all the stops to make this happen, and it’s particularly impressive when you consider that construction work started just before the start of a major global pandemic. “I would like to thank colleagues who were involved in this excellent project from across the Council and our key partners for making this outstanding achievement possible.  Derby has a new state-of-the-art leisure facility to be proud of.” See how we built Moorways Sports Village and the Olympic-sized pool here: https://youtu.be/uIGwyRy4Rh0 https://youtu.be/1z8lQCib9e4
