We have been recording our carbon footprint for our Derbyshire HQ and regional offices for the past decade and have made significant achievements during that time. Our latest report by The Planet Mark – a certification programme recognising commitment to continuous improvement in sustainability- which covers 2015-2016 - shows a 9% decrease in our carbon emissions for the year and a 48% decrease for the decade. Major initiatives aimed at making B&K more sustainable have included: Installation of ground mounted solar panels at our head office to generate renewable electricity that is used and exported Reduction in fuel usage by 57%. This has been through the introduction of more fuel efficient cars, including hybrids and increased use of rail Replacement of all air conditioning equipment with energy efficient systems or natural ventilation Greater use of paperless systems for storage, retrieval and the transmission of documents, drawings, submissions and reports – resulting in a 69% reduction in paper usage Group Chairman, John Kirkland, said: “We recognise the importance of minimising our impact on the environment and we continue to pro-actively manage this with procedures to measure and manage our carbon footprint and to set targets for reduction. “Our recent report details some significant achievements which are the result of continued investment in sustainable technologies and practices and continuous commitment from all our staff."
