North East economy receives £30m boost from Sunderland City Hall project

news image

More than £30m has been pumped into the North East economy through our construction of Sunderland’s City Hall. Regional suppliers have received a £30.59m boost from contracts associated with our construction of the new 190,000 sq ft public sector hub, which stands on Riverside Sunderland.  Almost £20m worth of work has been awarded to local SMEs on our supply chain network - helping support businesses and people across the region.  Senior Project Manager, Paul Anderson, said: "We are determined to ensure that the construction of City Hall reaps as many rewards as possible for local businesses and the local community too, and we’re really proud to be achieving that, with more than £30m spent with local suppliers, the lion’s share being SMEs.  "We have been able to add huge social value to this project, taking people out of long-term unemployment, supporting apprenticeships, engaging with young people to inspire them about careers available to them, and minimising the carbon footprint of this development through considerate choices - from recycling to avoiding single use plastics on site.  "We’re delighted to be supporting the local economy with this project which will also transform the way that residents access support services when City Hall opens later this year." The £42m project is being built on the site of the old Vaux Brewery and consists of two buildings joined by a central atrium and roof top pavilion. The project us due for completion in the Autumn.
