Celebrating our trainees in National Apprenticeship Week

news image

Apprenticeships are a great way for young people to start their career in construction.   Learning on a live site has so many advantages and earning while you learn is a major advantage.   In National Apprenticeship Week we want to celebrate our trainees and encourage students and school leavers to consider the degree apprenticeships we have on offer.   Alec studied for a T-Level in Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction and did a 45-day work experience stint with us. He then applied for one of our Degree Apprenticeships as a Trainee Quantity Surveyor and is now in his second year of his five-year course – spending one day a week at university and the rest of the time working on a live project.   All our apprentices are mentored by members of our Training Board and their achievements are celebrated at our B+K Academy events.   Alec was chosen along with four other students to take part in the Get the Jump Skills for Life campaign by the National Careers Service aimed at showing the education and training routes available for 14 to 19-year-olds. He is a great ambassador for T-Levels and the perfect candidate for a degree apprenticeship.   Umar also studied the same T-Level course and is now a Trainee Design Manager working on a site in the North West while undertaking his degree course. He said:   “My 9-week placement with B+K was an eye-opening experience, allowing me to gain first hand insight into various job roles within the industry such as project management, quantity surveying, site engineering and design management, as well as build many relationships and interpersonal skills with project teams. Thanks to these experiences I was able to gain a keen inkling towards design management, a role in which I am now a trainee.   “I started my apprenticeship in September 2023, and the exposure to various projects and information even in this short time, has been more than valuable. Trainee visits to sites all over the country have also been a fantastic learning experience into topics extremely relevant within the industry. The job comes with its challenges and may be difficult at times, but help is always available, and I look forward to progressing my career with Bowmer + Kirkland.”
