Carbon reduction strategy shortlisted for British Construction Industry Award

news image

A scheme to reduce the amount of carbon emitted by our sites, reduce our fuel consumption and at the same time save money, has been shortlisted for a British Construction Industry Award. The Flybrid kinetic energy recovery system is the perfect fit for our construction projects. We were one of only two construction companies to trial the PUNCH Power 200 system on our sites and were the first to have two of the systems on one project. The Punch Flybrid product uses a robust and durable flywheel energy storage system to significantly downsize generators powering tower cranes and other dynamically used equipment on site. We have two Wolff tower cranes on an £82m scheme for Manchester Metropolitan University, where a 300 kVA generator is specified for each crane, but we only require 150 kVA generators with a Punch Power 200 attached to each. This means that over the 45-week crane hire period: 60,750 litres of diesel per crane is saved 121,500 litres of total fuel is saved 318,330 kg carbon saved We now have 10 Punch Flybrid units on sites in Manchester, Coventry and London – all of which are reducing emissions into the atmosphere. Organised by the Institution of Civil Engineers, the BCIA recognise and reward excellence in project delivery and, crucially, those projects delivering positive outcomes for society. Our Flybrid programme is shortlisted for Carbon Net Zero Initiative of the Year and the winner is announced in October.
