With more than 2000 suppliers and sub-contractors on the books, the successful engagement with suppliers was going to be a large challenging task. Sustainability Manager, Dan Birkinshaw led process and created a strategy with a realistic target of engaging 50 suppliers to provide data.
To fully engage suppliers, a series of supplier days were organised at regional locations. A total of 650 different suppliers attended. Each event had a core focus on ESG, sustainability and social value commitments, as well as communicating our business credentials to help build better relationships. The events were also a great opportunity to understand the barriers for using low carbon materials and share innovative ideas to improve.
In addition to the supplier days, B+K officially became partners of the Supply Chain Sustainability School (SCSS) which features a carbon calculator, designed specifically for the construction industry supply chain and has quickly established as a vital tool for both engagement and measurement of supplier emissions.
Utilising the SCSS tools we engaged and encouraged our key suppliers to provide their company carbon data for 2023. Currently B+K only report Scope 1, 2 and limited Scope 3 carbon emissions. This data along with material delivery mileage will enable us to report our full Scope 1, 2 and 3 carbon footprint, which keeps us in line with our committed Carbon Reduction Plan (CRP), net zero roadmap and is leading the way in the construction industry.
Dan commented “The B+K carbon journey is going forward in several directions and elements need to be phased and implement at the right time and with the right approach to maximise the impact. Carbon management always starts with quality and consistent data collection, and this is what we are setting out to achieve. Frequent engagement with our supply chain can only bring benefits overall.”
