South Cambridge Science Centre

Share project

South Cambridge Science Centre at Dales Manor Business Park situated approx. 10 miles south of Cambridge city centre at Sawston.

The new building, known as SCSC, is built upon an old precast concrete manufacturing plant that was de commissioned back in 2018, and its structure demolished down to the slab level. The remaining concrete hardstanding and foundations have been removed, crushed and re used on site to form the new base for the ground works of the project.

Construction consists of large pad foundations, a concrete frame with curtain walling strip windows, composite cladding and finally finished with a brick slip system. The roof is sealed via a hot melt roofing membrane covered in insulation and ballast. Plant is located on the roof with a screen enclosing all around.

The design aim is for a net zero carbon development being one of the best carbon footprints in the UK.

Rainwater is utilised from the roof into a grey water harvesting system to feed the toilets for flushing and there is a large 269 space multi storey carpark, catering for 135 EV cars and also for E-Bikes with charging facility within a secure bike compound.
