The Stephenson Building is our third build for Newcastle University and the second under the NEUPC Framework. It follows the successful delivery of both the £46m Urban Sciences Building and the multi award winning £30m highly sustainable ‘Catalyst’.
The building was originally constructed in the 1950s and has a GIA of approximately 9,000m2. The building has undergone numerous minor modifications however, the structure remains largely unaltered. The original building was opened by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh in 1951 and named after engineering pioneer George Stephenson.
The main driver was to provide 21st Century facilities for both staff and students. This somewhat outdated building had a large footprint but was majority single storey and had a large internal courtyard which meant there was a lot of wasted space and a restricted “flow” to different departments of the existing building. The single storey section of the building has been demolished, extended and refurbished to provide a new 198,000 sq ft. four-storey plus basement learning facility to bring multiple engineering disciplines together under one roof in the form of a world class hub for leading research, cutting-edge innovation, teaching and crossdisciplinary collaboration.
