A new secondary school built using the modern methods of construction.
Located within the north east of Reading, adjacent to the famous Reading Festival site, the project was procured via the DfE MMC Framework, via a two-stage process and will accommodate 1,500 people including support staff. the school comprises of two buildings connected by enclosed corridors on the upper floors.
Facilities include a large sports hall, a leisure studio, separate main hall with foldaway tiered seating plus a dining hall and catering kitchen. Admin offices including reception, a SEN areas, Sixth Form area, faculty classrooms, sports changing facilities and the LRC (Learning Resource Centre) are located on the ground floor with more classrooms, art rooms, a plant room, and labs on the upper floors. Externally there is a high level of landscaping complete with beds that have to be maintained plus an undercover bicycle shelter.
The many large windows allow for natural light to stream into the building which is enhanced by the two storey atria within certain areas of the building.
Initially the BREEAM target for the scheme was ‘Good’ as part of the planning requirement, the team was tasked with achieving at least 60%. The project actually obtained 62% taking the final certificate to BREEAM ‘Very Good’.
The monetised Social Value target for the project was £8.9m and achieved an £14m worth of Social Value, some of the key activities included, 33% of full time employed local labour came from within a geographical radius of 30 miles, accommodated four T-Level students and achieved nine T-level weeks in total. Three apprentices and 50 apprentice weeks in total were also achieved.
