Construction of the Police Investigation Centre consisting of open plan and individual offices
The project is split into two buildings. One building is the main hub for the Northamptonshire police which is called the ‘Police Investigation Centre’. This building comprises of 22 main detention cells of which 2 are young offenders holding cells. The building also has highly soundproofed interview rooms, a main reception area, offices, plant / comms rooms and a highly secure charging desk area.
Due to the high security elements of the project the building is made up of a fully reinforced concrete insitu frame. This frame includes a bomb proof roof slab which is overlaid with insulation and a single ply membrane.
The Facade of the building is built up with a mixture of masonry to the cell and secure areas and then glazed curtain walling, timber cladding and render to the front of house areas. As this is a Home Office building the specifications are of a different nature to the standard building regulations. Specialist contractors have needed to be involved to deliver this.
The second building holds the office space for the HQ for the Northamptonshire police. This is a three storey concrete frame building. This needed to be highly secure so the same roofing structure was adopted as the PIC building.
The floor spaces are a mixture of both open plan areas and individual offices. This building is also a concrete frame with concrete roof with some areas of steelwork with insitu concrete core areas and lift shaft.
The facade is also a mixture of masonry to the outer stair cores, glazed curtain walling to the front and rear elevation of the office spaces with some metal cladding and timber cladding. The external areas around the buildings have car parking facilities, both open and covered. Tarmac access roads around both buildings and paved footpaths.
Due to the high security nature all fencing, gates external bollards etc. have been designed to Home Office approval.
