The redevelopment of M&S Cannock represents a landmark project for YourSpace by Bowmer + Kirkland

The redevelopment of M&S Cannock represents a landmark project for YourSpace by Bowmer + Kirkland, delivering the contractor’s first-ever store for Marks & Spencer and setting a new benchmark for the retailer’s Blueprint Foodhall concept.

As part of M&S’s nationwide modernisation programme, the scheme transformed a former Homebase store into a flagship foodhall through a comprehensive programme of heavy shell redevelopment, façade replacement and full internal fit-out. With the project receiving national recognition from the retailer on competition.

Project overview
The project extended far beyond a traditional retail fit-out, encompassing major structural, architectural and civil engineering works to create a modern, future-ready retail environment.

Extensive structural modifications were undertaken, including the creation of new load-bearing openings and strengthening works. The internal layout was fully reconfigured to support the latest M&S Blueprint layout which enables a more dynamic and customer-focused retail experience.

The existing frontage was demolished and replaced with a high-performance façade system. This included new glazing, automatic entrance doors and upgraded insulation, significantly enhancing both the visual identity and thermal efficiency of the building.

The building envelope was further enhanced through the removal and replacement of the existing cladding system. Delivered by B+K Group business Keyclad, the new rainscreen façade provides improved durability and performance, backed by a 20-year system guarantee.

A full reconstruction of the car park was carried out, including resurfacing, lighting and line marking. New stormwater drainage systems and attenuation measures were installed, alongside improved pedestrian routes, crossings and accessibility features to enhance the overall customer journey.

Internally, the store was transformed to meet the latest M&S Blueprint standards. This included the introduction of new food concepts, alongside upgraded refrigeration, back-of-house preparation areas, staff welfare facilities, MEP systems and digital integrations designed to elevate the customer experience.

M&S Cannock was not only Bowmer + Kirkland’s first project for the retailer, but also one of the most complex Blueprint Foodhall deliveries to date. The scale of structural, façade and external works set it apart from a typical retail fit-out, while the inclusion of specialist food concessions introduced additional technical requirements.

The outcome
The result is a fully redeveloped, future-proofed M&S Foodhall that sets a new standard for the Blueprint format. With a striking new façade, high-performance building envelope and enhanced external infrastructure, the store delivers both operational efficiency and an improved customer experience.

The project’s success was recognised nationally, achieving Foodhall of the Year and Safety Team of the Year at the M&S Construction Annual Awards 2025, firmly establishing Bowmer + Kirkland as a trusted partner for future M&S store delivery.
