Name: Will Holmes
Title: Apprentice Site Engineer
Course: BSc (Hons) Construction Management
Will Holmes is about to start the third year of his Site Engineer Apprenticeship with Bowmer + Kirkland. He is currently working on the Co-op Academy Florence MacWilliams project in Stoke-on-Trent, which is due to be handed over in September.
The project has involved installing temporary accommodation for the school whilst the main building was under construction. The completed development will create a brand-new secondary academy with sixth form provision for 1,150 students aged 11–19. The main school block includes an interconnecting sports hall, a four-court multi-use games area, football and cricket pitches and running track.
Will joined Bowmer + Kirkland straight from college after completing a diploma. He came into the construction industry without any prior experience but the skills he gained from his course, extra-curricular activities and enthusiasm help him to stand out.
As an Apprentice Site Engineer, Will carries out daily inspections, sets out tasks for subcontractors, runs surveys, reviews quality processes, ensures tasks are carried out correctly and safely and much more.
Will said: “When I began my apprenticeship, everything was completely new to me. But over time, I’ve gained confidence, knowledge, and hands-on experience, this has really helped me grow, both personally and professionally.
“I value the practical experience that this career path have given me, I have the opportunity to learn directly from qualified engineers, picking up value insights that can only come from experience, plus the knowledge that I gain from studying at university can be applied directly to project on-site and it helps provide a clearer understanding.
“Choosing an apprenticeship has given me a solid foundation within the construction industry and has helped me to build both practical and technical skills. I am supported along the way too within Bowmer + Kirkland and at university.”
