Tom Stevenson is a Project Manager for our Central Region, working on a wide range of projects, with the most recent being student accommodation schemes. His military career began in 2000 when he joined the Royal Marines - one of the most demanding infantry forces in the world.
As a Royal Marine recruit, he undertook the gruelling 32-week training programme which is designed to test physical, mental and moral abilities under high pressure environments. According to the Ministry of Defence, around 30-45% of recruits fail to complete the deliberately demanding training.
Tom completed the training and earnt his Green Beret which marks the progression of recruit to Marine. During his service he fought on extreme and challenging operations in Northern Ireland and Iraq, working and living in a high-risk environment day to day demanded constant alertness, discipline and teamwork.
Following the intensity of his experience in Iraq, Tom made the tough decision to step away from Military life in 2005 to pursue a new career direction. He took a gap year to reset and consider his next steps, it was during this time that he was introduced to Bowmer + Kirkland where his experience and skills gained as a Royal Marine were recognised and he began his career through our Degree Apprenticeship route as Trainee Engineer, later progressing to Site Management.
Tom notes that for those leaving the armed forces the transition from military to civilian life can be daunting. The structure, camaraderie, and pace of service life are unique, however stepping into construction he found that many aspects aligned to his military background, including structured problem-solving, teamwork, discipline, high-standards and accountability.
Tom said; “Many former members of the armed forces may not appreciate just how incredibly valuable their skillset is to businesses, especially within the construction sector. Countless roles in construction demand the same skills and qualities honed during military service, such as discipline, teamwork, problem-solving, and accountability. These are precisely the kind of transferable skills that employers are seeking.”
“Bowmer + Kirkland is a great employer to transition from a military role to, every member of staff is supported from day one through mentors and team members, plus, training and development is actively encouraged to help everyone reach their full potential, this has been great career move for me.”
