Name: Liam Coldicott
Job title: Apprentice Site Manager
I really wanted to be on a course that combined both the educational and academic aspects of construction, as well as the practical side. When I first started researching into the course, I really liked the sound of the day release to a work placement, as it would give me the chance to better my knowledge, and help develop my on-site skills within the industry.
I really wanted to be on a course that combined both the educational and academic aspects of construction, as well as the practical side. When I first started researching into the course, I really liked the sound of the day release to a work placement, as it would give me the chance to better my knowledge, and help develop my on-site skills within the industry.
My T Level covered lots of aspects of construction, ranging from legislation and law, to on site construction methods and surveying methods. We also had lots of practice using AutoCAD in both in 2D and 3D. During the second year, we focussed on surveying, which included going outside, using dumpy levels, e-staffs and various other equipment to survey and measure different buildings around the site.
We then went on to have core exams at the end of the first and second years, which involved all the topics we had been working on.
On a typical day, I will arrive at 8:30, and start off by checking through my emails, the four projects I was working on and the various other platforms that I worked from during my placement. This is followed by a site walk, to check the weekly progress, and what I have missed on the days where I have been at college. I ask certain managers in the office what has happened over the past few days, so I can catch up on the start of the week.
After this, I could be moving onto something practical to help out the quantity surveyors, site managers or design engineers. This could be measuring, completing inspections or creating spreadsheets. After this, I could be doing some research on the industry to help with my overall knowledge, for example, looking into building regulations or learning about different methods of offsite construction. A site inspection always finishes off the day, ready for when I leave at 4:30.
“After I finish my T Level, I am hoping to try and find a degree apprenticeship. I believe this is the best option and will be critical for my future. I will continue to come to the work placement with B+K even though my contracted hours are soon to be finished, because of the great amount of knowledge and experience I am currently gaining from being at this company. If I do not manage to find a degree apprenticeship, I have also applied to five different universities, which will act as a backup option, each one studying construction management."
Liam applied for 2025 Degree Apprenticeship intake in January 2025 and, after successfully completing his T Level course, he was offered a place on our Construction Degree Apprenticeship Scheme in August 2025 and is now working as a Bowmer + Kirkland Degree Apprentice.
