Building a career from the ground up

Name: Lauren Milner
Job title: Apprentice Quantity Surveyor
Course: Chartered Surveyor (Quantity Surveyor Pathway) Degree Apprenticeship

For Lauren, a week of work experience during her A-levels was all it took to set the course for her future.

“I was studying Maths, Physics and Psychology and wasn’t completely sure what I wanted to do,” she recalls. “But after a week with Bowmer + Kirkland, I knew Quantity Surveying was the path for me.”

Lauren joined our Degree Apprenticeship Scheme as an apprentice Quantity Surveyor in September 2022, working within our North Midlands & Yorkshire region. The programme allows her to work four days a week while studying at university one day a week, which provides a valuable balance of hands-on experience and academic learning.

No two days are the same

Lauren splits her time between the office and onsite, and her responsibilities are as varied as the environments she works in.

“In the office, I usually start my day by checking emails and creating a to-do list with my line manager,” she says. “That could include anything from sending out enquiries for subcontract packages, comparing quotations, or pulling together orders.”

When she’s based on a project site, her day takes on a different pace. “I often take minutes during progress meetings between the site team and subcontractors, and I’ll also spend time out on site to check on progress. That really helps when we’re assessing valuations for payment and gives me a clearer understanding of how the project is developing.”

Communication is key

With so many moving parts in a construction project, Lauren says strong communication is one of the most important skills for any Quantity Surveyor.

“You’re constantly working with different people — the design team, the site team, subcontractors and consultants. You need to stay on top of any changes and make sure everyone’s aligned.”

Balancing act

Balancing work, study and a social life isn’t always easy, but Lauren has found a rhythm that works for her.

“It can be a challenge,” she admits, “but staying organised is essential. I make sure I use my university day wisely and, if needed, I’ll do a bit in the evening so I can keep my weekends free.”

Supportive and social

For Lauren, one of the highlights of life at B+K is the support network.

“The team is fantastic. If I’m unsure about anything, whether it’s a quote I’m reviewing or a question about a project, there’s always someone willing to help. Plus, there are lots of other apprentices, so we all support each other with both work and uni.”

Lauren received the Apprentice of the Year at the North Midlands & Yorkshire annual end of year meeting.
