Name: Ellie Lewis
Job title: Apprentice site manager
Course: Construction Site Management

Ellie’s path into construction started with curiosity and was solidified through hands-on experience. She began her career studying a T-Level in Construction, Design, Planning and Surveying and it was the experience of being on a construction site, at the heart of the action that led her into a Site Management Apprenticeship.

After joining Bowmer + Kirkland, Ellie began working on Bosvena SEMH School in Bodmin, a brand-new facility which will provide support for up to 65 young people with social, emotional and mental health needs within the local community and across Cornwall. Ellie, along with the wider Bowmer + Kirkland Western team, successfully completed the two-storey scheme which features a wide range of teaching spaces, a multi-use games area, sports facilities and car-parking in summer 2025.

Ellie is a great advocate for apprenticeships, during her time working on Bosvena School, she proactively shared her experience with students at Bodmin College, delivering a talk to 250 year 10 pupils. She spoke confidently and passionately about her career journey so far and the benefits of apprenticeships as an exciting and rewarding career path. Her presentation sparked interest from the pupils resulting in a detailed question and answer session from both students and teachers.

On site, no two days are ever the same for Ellie, and that’s exactly what she loves about her role, whilst working on the school, she had the opportunity to run her own weekly meetings for supervisors to discuss the work for the week ahead, this helped her build her confidence manage tasks and take responsibility.

Ellie said: “As an apprentice, being given the task of running meetings was a key step in my development to becoming a Site Manager, I now have the confidence to run meetings myself as I have been encouraged and supported by the team along the way. I am really starting to see how I am progressing in terms of confidence and understanding of health and safety, construction terminology and software.

“The on and off the job training that a construction apprenticeship provides is invaluable. I can apply theory learnt at university to day-to-day activities, work towards a high-class degree whilst earning a salary. As a Bowmer + Kirkland apprentice you receive a wide range of training and you’re supported along the way.”
